9.9 School of Communication Student Placement Report 2013

Graduates of 9.9 School of Communication have proved yet again that they can pull of media jobs with ease, securing placements at top local and international media houses.

In the Applied Journalism programme, The New York Times, UTV Bloomberg and Hindustan Times and are amongst the most popular media houses to offer placements to the 2013 batch students.

Students also served internships at CNN IBN, Headlines Today, ET Now, India Today Group, international newswire, Agence France Presse (AFP). Other graduates were snapped up by media houses like NewsX, ANI and 9.9 Media publishing house.

Digital Media Communications graduates from the 2013 batch are now working for Hindustan Times, integrated marketing/ advertising house, Cheil Worldwide India, Maxus, a media planning agency under the large global organisation, GroupM, and respected NGO, Pragya in the marcomm field.

9.9 SoC Programme Head, Inga Butefisch, said the college had been able to secure high-calibre internships and placements for students because of the small student numbers, the quality of instruction and the supported 3-month internship.

“The school has excellent networks to tap into to source outstanding faculty to teach its courses, very good news media and digital media practitioners to offer workshops and guest talks, and media houses and digital and creative agencies to provide workplace learning opportunities,” she said.

In a post-internship survey of the 2013 batch, 75% students said they had interned at their preferred media houses.

Gunjan Aggarwal, Associate Dean of Career Services, says 9.9 School of Communication has an edge over other schools on placements because of the individualised attention that each student receives throughout the year.

  “We take into account student interests and strengths while advising students as to their best options for their overall career goals,” Gunjan said.

Graduates from the AJMC programme 2013 batch are earning as much as Rs 3.6 lakh per annum. Salaries for 9.9 SoC Digital Media graduates range up to Rs 3.5 lakhs per annum.

75% agreed they got into one of their Top 3 choices of media house 40% rated the SoC journalism/DMC course 9 out of 10; 35% an 8/10 and 20% a 7/10 80% agreed they were happy with their choice of school, with 30% of them strongly agreeing.

Student, Gargi Singh, said the faculty at SoC had been very committed to placing students in highly reputed organisations. “I got placed at AFP for my internship and it has been a very good learning experience,” she said. 

The students have also learnt that they can do more than just reporting in the field of media. Vinod Kuchipudi has been working in the research unit with NewsX and Nikita Jain has been working with NewsX as a packaging producer.

Two students were placed with the Production Team at Newswire, Asian News International (ANI).

Vishnu Varma, who was interning with The New York Times, got absorbed there once he completed his internship. Vishnu says, "The New York Times, without a doubt, is one of the Top 3 media houses and I am privileged to have got an opportunity to work there.”

Another student Vishakha Saxena who looks after the online and social media content for Hindustan Times says that she is really glad that she picked 9.9 SoC. She says, "The school really had the best internship module and 9.9 SoC guides you step by step for plunging your internship into a full time job."

Previous batches have also been placed or served internships at Wall Street Journal, NDTV Convergence, NDTV Good Times and popular magazines, Harper's Bazaar, Businessworld and TimeOut Delhi. 

Earlier batches of SoC’s DMC programme were picked by high-profile media and technology houses like Gizmodo, Hungama, Internet Moguls and Refine Interactive and production houses like ESP Films.
