Placement Report 2012

2012 Placement Report for Applied Journalism and Digital Media programme

Graduates of 9.9 School of Communication have again marched into the workforce with outstanding positions in coveted news media and digital media communications firms.

In the Applied Journalism programme, The Wall Street Journal and NDTV are amongst the respected media houses to offer placements to the 2012 batch students, making this the third banner year for the school. Other graduates were snapped up by media houses like ANI and 9.9 Media, production houses such as ESP Films and as writers in corporate houses.

Students also served internships at Hindustan Times, Harper's Bazaar, NDTV Convergence and NDTV Good Times, NewsX and the popular magazines, Businessworld and TimeOut Delhi.

Graduates of 9.9 SoC’s Digital Media Communications programme were picked up by Hungama Digital Services, Brandlogist Communications, Showhouse Event Management, E-squared, C3Q Multimedia and Political Edge. They had also interned at Blue Mango, Webchutney, McCann-Erickson and Digitas.

While 40% of the SoC journalism students opted for career-starts in broadcast, 7% opted for the traditional division of the media - print. Two graduates have made their way into the related field of public relations PR/media relations, with one student scooped up by top firm, Perfect Relations. The remaining journalism graduates have moved into a combination of video production and copy editing and copywriting for firms including MNCs.

Salaries for the 9.9 SoC placements for Applied Journalism students averaged Rs. 2.5 lakhs per annum.

Salaries for the 9.9 SoC placements for Digital Media students averaged Rs 3.0 lakhs per annum.

Saptarishi Dutta, snapped up by Wall Street Journal as a researcher in their Delhi bureau, following an internship at Businessworld magazine, says that 9.9 School of Communication faculty is extremely supportive and helps you identify what kind of medium - print or electronic – is suitable for you.

“The curriculum offered by SoC is very unique and prepares us well before we finally enter the professional world,” he said. “A diploma from SoC sets you apart from others as the training received here exposed us to all forms of media rather than forcing us to choose between print or electronic. This enabled us to figure out our strengths and weaknesses before we finally took the plunge.”

Batchmate Amrita Kohli, who has been picked up by NDTV Convergence as a trainee sub-editor, said she had “a great learning experience” at SoC.

“The structure allowed me to try out different fields of media in a protected environment,” Amrita said. “As far as internships go, my experience was positive. I was provided with great opportunities first with Harper's Bazaar and then HT. SoC helped me secure both these internships and the continued classes during the internships helped a lot.”

Amrita thanked 9.9 SoC for delivering on what they promised when she joined.

Gunjan Aggarwal, Associate Dean of Career Services, says 9.9 School of Communication has an edge over other schools on placements because of the individualised attention that each student receives throughout the year.

“We try taking into account student interests and strengths while advising students as to their best options for their overall career goals,” Gunjan said. “While some students start out thinking they want to work in one medium, over time many of them change their direction. By giving them a wide assortment of classes, mentoring them throughout the year, and providing them with an integrated internship, they can explore their options thoroughly and really show their mettle to recruiters.”

Students from 9.9 SoC’s 2011 batch were picked up by a diverse group of media outlets, including Headlines Today, ANI,, TIMESNOW, Democratic World, Inc India, Fashion and You, Sunday Guardian, Network 18, NewsX, Blue Mango and 9.9 Media.
